Recently there was a<a href="http://community.plm.automation.siemens.com/t5/Solid-Edge-Discussion-Forum/Changing-line-dimensions-to-inches/m-p/3010" target="_blank"> post on the new Siemens PLM Community forums</a> (if you’re not a member of the <a href="http://community.plm.automation.siemens.com/t5/Solid-Edge/ct-p/solid-edge" target="_blank">new Solid Edge forums</a> you should be!) about "Changing line dimensions to inches".<br />
<br />
The preference for the Solid Edge modeling standard is defined when you first install Solid Edge:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiogQZGCU5eQYtLPopH2YtOt8Dz82guc-QWahW8gMkBNZD3w-fBiCr92zklhBqKERCGGCNrLG79N1P5YhLxr6XcRO7pMvqgLFUEcuq-8VXDqjsPSIc2EIUi9MCpydT4135CsIA7VOiV1Pu/s1600/screenshot.12.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiogQZGCU5eQYtLPopH2YtOt8Dz82guc-QWahW8gMkBNZD3w-fBiCr92zklhBqKERCGGCNrLG79N1P5YhLxr6XcRO7pMvqgLFUEcuq-8VXDqjsPSIc2EIUi9MCpydT4135CsIA7VOiV1Pu/s400/screenshot.12.png" width="400" /></a></div>
This setting cannot be easily changed once Solid Edge is installed without some hacking. <br />
<a name='more'></a>The user finally uninstalled Solid Edge and re-installed Solid Edge to his desired modeling and template standards. <br />
<br />
There is however a way to avoid uninstalling and re-installing Solid Edge by changing the registry keys and manually copy the default template files. To manually change the Solid Edge modeling standard and default templates:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Modify the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Unigraphics Solutions\Solid Edge\Version 106\TemplateStandard to the desired standards i.e ISO, ANSI, JIS, etc.</li>
<li>Copy the templates for the desired standard from C:\Program Files\Solid Edge ST6\Template\More into C:\Program Files\Solid Edge ST6\Template.</li>
</ol>
<br />
However, this is a manual process and like all manual processes can be incorrectly implemented. Also, for some of us (support engineers!), we need to quickly change modeling standards and default templates; so how to change the Solid Edge modeling standard quickly without all the manual editing?<br />
<br />
Based on the original poster’s question and my own personal need, I wrote a PowerShell script to allow you to programmatically change the Solid Edge modeling standard. This <a href="http://github.com/uk-dave/SolidEdge/" target="_blank">script is available from my GitHub site</a> (along with other Solid Edge tweaks if you haven’t checked it out yet!).<br />
<br />
As with all my scripts YMMV and they are unsupported but if you have any issues or requests with the script, please post them below in the Comments. Hopefully this script will be of use to some of you...<br />
<br />
Download the PowerShell script from <a href="http://raw.github.com/uk-dave/SolidEdge/master/ChangeSolidEdgeStandard.ps1" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
P.S. If you encounter a PowerShell error about execution of scripts read the comments header in the file on how to resolve.<br />

A while back I posted on how to open <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/opening-autocad-dwg-files-into-single.html" target="_blank">2D AutoCAD .dwg</a> and <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/follow-up-on-opening-autocad-dwg-files.html" target="_blank">.dxf files</a> by opening from Windows Explorer into a single instance of Solid Edge. Recently saw a request for similar functionality but for opening 3D STEP (.step and .stp) files by default from Windows Explorer into Solid Edge.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
You could simply use the Control Panel -> Default Programs settings to associate the STEP file types (.step and .stp) with the Solid Edge executable. Using this method will result in multiple instance of Solid Edge being launched every time you double-click to open a STEP file from Windows Explorer.<br />
<br />
Another issue you may find with using the Default Programs settings is that other software applications may already have defined some registry settings for the .step and .stp file extensions that then prevents setting the STEP file extensions from defaulting to opening with Solid Edge (myself and a customer both experienced this issue).<br />
<br />
So if you are having issues associating STEP files to open by default into Solid Edge or want STEP files to open into a single instance of Solid Edge then use the following registry entries:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.stp]<br /><br />[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.stp]<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.stp]<br />@="SolidEdge.PartDocument"<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.stp]<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.stp\OpenWithList]<br />"a"="Edge.exe"<br />"MRUList"="a"<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.stp\OpenWithProgids]<br />"SolidEdge.PartDocument"=hex(0):<br /><br />[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.step]<br /><br />[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.step]<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.step]<br />@="SolidEdge.PartDocument"<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.step]<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.step\OpenWithList]<br />"a"="Edge.exe"<br />"MRUList"="a"<br /><br />[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.step\OpenWithProgids]<br />"SolidEdge.PartDocument"=hex(0):</span></blockquote>
For your convenience I have also provided a <a href="https://raw.github.com/uk-dave/SolidEdge/master/open_step_in_solid_edge.reg" target="_blank">registry file that you can download</a> from <a href="https://github.com/uk-dave" target="_blank">my new GitHub site</a>. <br />

<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/Ford_Pinto.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="205" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/Ford_Pinto.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
What changes can you make to improve Solid Edge performance and reliability?<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I have already written multiple posts on tweaks for improving various aspects of Windows and subsequently Solid Edge related performance and reliability. You can quickly view many of those older posts by searching for the tags "<a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/tweaks" target="_blank">tweaks</a>" and "<a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/performance" target="_blank">performance</a>". <br />
<br />
But to bring some of those previous posts together into one place, and more importantly, to review some basic configuration tweaks that haven't been covered before. To be honest, some of these tweaks I'm going to present I always think of as being basic Solid Edge set up and configuration but I still often find myself having to share these with other users. So time to publicly share them.<br />
<br />
Typical tweaks to help improve Solid Edge performance and reliability include, in no particular order of priority:<br />
<ul>
<li>As much RAM as you can get onto the workstation. </li>
<li>If running a 32-bit OS with 4GB RAM upgrade to 64-bit OS to take full advantage of the full 4GB RAM for Solid Edge. A 32-bit OS does *not* fully utilize the full 4GB RAM on a workstation. </li>
<li>If running a 64-bit OS with only 32-bit Solid Edge add additional RAM above 4GB. Solid Edge 32-bit can only use 4GB RAM maximum but additional RAM can be used by other programs while running Solid Edge .</li>
<li>If running 32-bit Windows set boot switches. On XP set the /3GB and /USERVA=2700 switches. On Vista/Win 7 set the IncreaseUserVa boot switch. </li>
<li>Set the Windows Visual Effects to "best performance". More information can be found <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/tweak-and-optimize-windows-7-with.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</li>
<li>Set the Windows swap file initial size and maximum size both to 2 X RAM.</li>
<li>Disable Windows thumbnail caching. More information can be found <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/resolving-solid-edge-network-save.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</li>
<li>Keep the hard drives defragmented. More information can be found <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/improving-windows-7-performance-with.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</li>
<li>Disable unnecessary services and startup programs including applications running in the System Tray. More information can be found <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/tweak-and-optimize-windows-7-with.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</li>
<li>Relocate swap and cache files onto *physically* separate disk drives from the software (separate partitions/drive letters located on the same physical drive do not count).</li>
<li>Tweak the workstation network settings for optimum performance. I will being doing another post in the near future with detailed network related performance tweaking suggestions but in the mean time some information can be found <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/tweak-and-optimize-windows-7-with.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </li>
<li>Do not run multiple applications when running Solid Edge i.e. leave as much RAM as possible available to Solid Edge.</li>
<li>Disable virus scanning on the Solid Edge file types and Solid Edge install folders. More information can be found <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/improve-solid-edge-performance-by-95-on.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</li>
</ul>
And don't forget to review my previous posts on <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/tweaks" target="_blank">tweaks</a> and <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/performance" target="_blank">performance</a>.<br />
<br />
As with all my posts,YMMV. <br />
<br />
So what are some of the tweaks you make on your systems to help improve overall Solid Edge performance and reliability?<br />
<br />
<br />

Sometimes programs are blocked from being installed onto certain versions of operating systems even though those programs may actually run fine without any issues once installed. Perhaps it is newer software and the vendor doesn’t support (either
intentionally or unintentionally) an older version of the operating
system with a new release of software i.e. ST5 Solid Edge License
Manager on Windows Server 2003:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT80SRvUIK4dyDpphxyjzrQ49MdEqDop8P4Yo5CoHD1m4r7fCp86ST_pSxYwnCJj4Ep3UaZ5OyI8QiJzd0U2h1qhY-RAUlcGqwYn3djFR9UJSlT5Vqh7DYjH9bvshiUmHpNW3BdhSJW1Ri/s1600/screenshot.2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT80SRvUIK4dyDpphxyjzrQ49MdEqDop8P4Yo5CoHD1m4r7fCp86ST_pSxYwnCJj4Ep3UaZ5OyI8QiJzd0U2h1qhY-RAUlcGqwYn3djFR9UJSlT5Vqh7DYjH9bvshiUmHpNW3BdhSJW1Ri/s400/screenshot.2.png" height="243" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Or maybe the software is older software created before a newer version of the
operating system existed i.e. ST2 SEEC Administrator on Windows 2008 R2:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ7-FezmCw-aLIaWpV7X40n0plccCc6NpK3xRbqmmNCqmUNn1Yx5tPsVG_yeePL8H-cptdAOcN0N-Cg1oXSOwuXddEaecXxRPTEniog1L_dgLUJIvEx1i2AyKwNRlDtqEmIv_TQsBwK81M/s1600/screenshot.12.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ7-FezmCw-aLIaWpV7X40n0plccCc6NpK3xRbqmmNCqmUNn1Yx5tPsVG_yeePL8H-cptdAOcN0N-Cg1oXSOwuXddEaecXxRPTEniog1L_dgLUJIvEx1i2AyKwNRlDtqEmIv_TQsBwK81M/s400/screenshot.12.png" height="118" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Blocked installs because of operating system version can be quite easily overcome by using <a href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa370557%28v=vs.85%29.aspx" target="_blank">Orca</a>, a free Microsoft tool that allows you to quickly and easily modify and edit the .msi installer files.<br />
<br />
Microsoft provides <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255905%20" target="_blank">a KB article on using Orca</a> but it specifically doesn’t specifically address how to override and remove operating system version restrictions.<br />
<br />
First you must download and install Orca. Unfortunately Microsoft does not provide a direct download of Orca. In order to get Orca you must <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8442" target="_blank">download and install the Microsoft Windows SDK</a> which includes Orca.<br />
<br />
Or to save yourself some time you can search the interweb for a <a href="http://myserverissick.com/2011/04/orca-5-msi-editing-tool/" target="_blank">standalone copy of Orca someone has already extracted</a> from the Microsoft SDK for you. <br />
<br />
However you end up getting Orca, once installed, you are then ready to begin modifying the software .msi installer file. <br />
<br />
Back up the software .msi installer file:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFMb-lii39Ppzhtco-Xr6EPXgiUj6U5vBAqgTn9Ic-4zXjzetBjZm9Ie3A_03GJgnFCYit4Tr8FRyTXxchfU2mGWCVEllGELSIglLzrCBzSDczod5pFIOYS77907lOtn1_uUXSr4wBTCIH/s1600/screenshot.3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFMb-lii39Ppzhtco-Xr6EPXgiUj6U5vBAqgTn9Ic-4zXjzetBjZm9Ie3A_03GJgnFCYit4Tr8FRyTXxchfU2mGWCVEllGELSIglLzrCBzSDczod5pFIOYS77907lOtn1_uUXSr4wBTCIH/s400/screenshot.3.png" height="196" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Launch Orca:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMqPMU07CKK1lHhH24Fzoh7hW4GFO58kts_CMpNPVuN_26In_QDOeCh64QKCW5xIPXzYZEBsX-9lLL3k5casrWICCpHAc16HWFmr1CkvUCwsqiXs4kN-nseJCqNUUpHnpSg7NHKgn3uCJN/s1600/screenshot.4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMqPMU07CKK1lHhH24Fzoh7hW4GFO58kts_CMpNPVuN_26In_QDOeCh64QKCW5xIPXzYZEBsX-9lLL3k5casrWICCpHAc16HWFmr1CkvUCwsqiXs4kN-nseJCqNUUpHnpSg7NHKgn3uCJN/s400/screenshot.4.png" height="187" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Select File -> Open ->Browse to the software .msi installer file ->Open:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWqW_oSpwXh-6fX0_HNsCjR3mIHLNSGVP2qO_kGHECDNqiso7Gdi3uA7kPY0FgTjkKIa0n2q9m8XYYh4uRI976tXeoDScAz1-7fRYpkwD3HD8oc13D6exTWa96y2IYZwjNQu72qnpfgAyZ/s1600/screenshot.5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWqW_oSpwXh-6fX0_HNsCjR3mIHLNSGVP2qO_kGHECDNqiso7Gdi3uA7kPY0FgTjkKIa0n2q9m8XYYh4uRI976tXeoDScAz1-7fRYpkwD3HD8oc13D6exTWa96y2IYZwjNQu72qnpfgAyZ/s400/screenshot.5.png" height="290" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In the Tables column on the left-hand side locate the “LaunchCondition” table:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn0lzJBpMGV7l9xONVnN7ZBKq0Wy3MDAGo8HqU-iy6wI8dUh_bGKBsSOs7fnP6d-UZd2TIel7ZMTP84LZOyYD2qhDHg7w7mnNY6uoN72p_LoEc6FGOtm5O3j1j8htdVXdktuAeI09afHFm/s1600/screenshot.6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn0lzJBpMGV7l9xONVnN7ZBKq0Wy3MDAGo8HqU-iy6wI8dUh_bGKBsSOs7fnP6d-UZd2TIel7ZMTP84LZOyYD2qhDHg7w7mnNY6uoN72p_LoEc6FGOtm5O3j1j8htdVXdktuAeI09afHFm/s400/screenshot.6.png" height="307" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
In the Condition column on the right-hand side select the condition that is blocking the software from installing. Typically this will be a condition containing the string “Version” in it somewhere:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg03eaVkOuf6Mx3pNUtYb7e4XA2vE0t9V2u8FpmUO79E5R3rYHa2Kzwexl7ZX891n0sSM0rabA_FPFwseOU8VNleGyZPk_YJ1pK_AsB_eol_DsxNv65qVGivqFhK-L3dFB2kRU2C-BukVSS/s1600/screenshot.7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg03eaVkOuf6Mx3pNUtYb7e4XA2vE0t9V2u8FpmUO79E5R3rYHa2Kzwexl7ZX891n0sSM0rabA_FPFwseOU8VNleGyZPk_YJ1pK_AsB_eol_DsxNv65qVGivqFhK-L3dFB2kRU2C-BukVSS/s400/screenshot.7.png" height="307" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You can then either double-click on the condition and manually edit the condition or right-click and select “Drop Row” to delete the condition all together. I typically drop the row to bypass *all* OS version checking:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
File -> Save the modified .msi file and exit out of Orca:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbsbEueJGB6ETtvE2W-atxrlx6ILpl1yGbenUuQYv03KnwlKjFegrolLg8qxrWHALlIox5Ts_hvGhyAGFBucqdrlHYfgKnVzQWjr9hGKPi_y_jiONnZVl4DncdCJBw0R_Z-xF6wXEU73Ns/s1600/screenshot.10.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbsbEueJGB6ETtvE2W-atxrlx6ILpl1yGbenUuQYv03KnwlKjFegrolLg8qxrWHALlIox5Ts_hvGhyAGFBucqdrlHYfgKnVzQWjr9hGKPi_y_jiONnZVl4DncdCJBw0R_Z-xF6wXEU73Ns/s400/screenshot.10.png" height="307" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You should now be able to launch the software .msi installer and successfully install the software to the previously blocked operating system:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGIsVTJ3QIrQFkNZdf1f3rHK9HL1wdfaLXh-S5ezd2yT2NlB70a1iuS8CKxVhwJQ_DNNDM4PBt_DcJN8jCQ9D4maKJuKqQhQhfg6zb-sK5-BiopkqGnDN6FgaupVVvQD-rIM4ZykqvCTvG/s1600/screenshot.11.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGIsVTJ3QIrQFkNZdf1f3rHK9HL1wdfaLXh-S5ezd2yT2NlB70a1iuS8CKxVhwJQ_DNNDM4PBt_DcJN8jCQ9D4maKJuKqQhQhfg6zb-sK5-BiopkqGnDN6FgaupVVvQD-rIM4ZykqvCTvG/s400/screenshot.11.png" height="207" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As an added bonus, once you’ve downloaded Orca, it runs standalone so you can add it to your portable software toolbox. (As an administrator you do have a set of portable tools, don’t you? If not check out two of my fav portable application toolsets, <a href="http://portableapps.com/" target="_blank">PortableApps</a> and <a href="http://www.liberkey.com/" target="_blank">LiberKey</a>).<br />
<br />
Just remember that when you install software onto unsupported platforms you cannot typically expect support or help from product support (GTAC?) with resolving problems with software on unsupported platforms ;-)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06447170267475311967noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7178684148547950944.post-14160580231437682362012-08-28T10:26:00.001+01:002012-08-28T10:26:23.477+01:00Increasing Solid Edge Command Ribbon Button Size<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If you have a high resolution monitor or a visual impairment the default buttons and icons in the Solid Edge Command Ribbon may be too small to see. There is a way in Solid Edge to increase the size of these icons and buttons.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
In Solid Edge, Application Button -> Solid Edge Options -> Helpers toggle on the "Increase buttons on Command Ribbon by 2X" option:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There have been multiple reports of users losing Solid Edge data when saving Solid Edge files over the network on Windows 7. Here is a fix for the network save issue and the fix also adds a nice little performance improvement to the system as well.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The issue revolves around the fact that with Windows 7, the thumbcache.dll can still have an open handle to the thumbs.db file and is unable to release the handle to the file in a timely fashion resulting in the Solid Edge file not being able to be saved to the folder.<br />
<br />
Turning off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files resolves this issue.<br />
<br />
How to turn off caching of thumbnails? There are two methods for disabling the caching of thumbnails, enabling a group policy or editing the registry.<br />
<br />
<u>Disable Caching of Thumbnails Using a Group Policy</u>.<br />
<br />
In the Windows 7 Search box enter gpedit.msc and hit Enter: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNSgn6xiMsxGEKHIdWoSVQ-RFtSpu_UesfcNoYK65mJLXEYskbqPadzi9_Zs9RfWZJFaoEPlsjUInaOc8Y_8dYNRZbdr4NemnGmA-KcrKXckTO586rc5wVl_29vk1_fazJKMnK-vWFaKZF/s1600/screenshot.1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNSgn6xiMsxGEKHIdWoSVQ-RFtSpu_UesfcNoYK65mJLXEYskbqPadzi9_Zs9RfWZJFaoEPlsjUInaOc8Y_8dYNRZbdr4NemnGmA-KcrKXckTO586rc5wVl_29vk1_fazJKMnK-vWFaKZF/s400/screenshot.1.png" width="345" /></a></div>
<br />
The Local Group Policy editor is launched. In the left hand pane locate and select User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer:<br />

<u>Disable Caching of Thumbnails by Setting a Registry Switch</u><br />
<br />
Alternatively you can disable caching by setting a registry switch.<br />
<br />
Launch your favorite registry editing tool i.e. regedit.<br />
<br />
Locate or create a dword key "DisableThumbsDBOnNetworkFolders" under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer and set its value to 1:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Reboot the workstation.<br />
<br />
I have also <a href="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10512738/Blog%20Files/turn_off_caching_thumbnails.reg" target="_blank">provided a registry file</a> that you can simply download and double-click on to install the above registry switch for you. <br />
<br />
There is actually a <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2025703" target="_blank">Microsoft Support article around this issue</a> which also provides the same fixes. <br />
<br />
Implementing this fix has also been shown to improve performance in some areas of Solid Edge and Windows including the Switch Window thumbnail preview in Solid Edge when files are opened over the network. Check out some of my <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/performance">other posts on improving Solid Edge performance</a>.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06447170267475311967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7178684148547950944.post-64634805540204401242012-07-16T12:18:00.000+01:002012-07-16T12:19:06.056+01:00Quickly Toggling Between Transparent and Opaque PathFinder in Solid Edge<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You can toggle between transparent and opaque PathFinder by using the Solid Edge Options -> Helpers. But did you know there is a quicker way to easily toggle back and forth between a transparent and opaque PathFinder?<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Simply hold down the Ctrl key and double-click on the title bar at the top of the PathFinder. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibUjoh3pr378WK0OatU63CBqszA_BOQCJn2wTN0jI_tVfWqoTYKnSvKq54wUc-tvoYNUX0PNU-0vqoOshqfTH2xobS8OZjkFtj_yMhkMMSqN8TnRveAf7GzMV898v08b-NfpLEYcc7xxpY/s1600/toggle_pathfinder.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibUjoh3pr378WK0OatU63CBqszA_BOQCJn2wTN0jI_tVfWqoTYKnSvKq54wUc-tvoYNUX0PNU-0vqoOshqfTH2xobS8OZjkFtj_yMhkMMSqN8TnRveAf7GzMV898v08b-NfpLEYcc7xxpY/s400/toggle_pathfinder.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Voilà! The PathFinder is now quickly toggled back and forth between transparent and opaque.<br />

<br />
PROBLEM:<br />
<br />
Teamcenter's 64 bit rich client release may run out of Java memory, which<br />
might impact performance or cause Teamcenter to fail. A modification to<br />
settings in the Teamcenter.ini in Portal Root is required to resolve this<br />
issue. Teamcenter.ini settings that work acceptably in the 32 bit Rich <br />
Client may need to be increased for the 64 bit client.<br />
<br />
REMEDY:<br />
<br />
This SFB discusses shows how to configure the Teamcenter rich client to<br />
increase Java memory when using Rich Client.<br />
<br />
Teamcenter Java <br />
<br />
If your machine has enough physical memory, adjust the JVM heap size in the<br />
Teamcenter.ini file to a higher value, e.g. 1024Mb. This will avoid <br />
running out of JVM memory. This issue will be corrected in future versions<br />
of Teamcenter.<br />
<br />
Update the Teamcenter.ini file within your install location with the<br />
changes below and then restart the Teamcenter client application.<br />
<br />
Change the following:<br />
-vm<br />
<path to Rich Client JRE>\portal\jre\bin<br />
-vmargs<br />
-Xmx512m<br />
-XX:MaxPermSize=128m<br />
-Xbootclasspath/... <-- full path not shown<br />
<br />

-vm<br />
<path to Rich Client JRE>\portal\jre\bin<br />
-vmargs<br />
-Xmx1024m<br />

-Xbootclasspath/... <-- full path not shown<br />

P.S. It has been 3 months since my last post. My apologies but I have been in
transition in my personal life that has affected my ability to blog on
technical matters. More to come on those changes later but suffice to
say I am now getting settled again to where I can begin posting again. Thank you everyone for your patience.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06447170267475311967noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7178684148547950944.post-14387935542387691822012-03-12T14:47:00.000+00:002012-06-18T10:32:36.851+01:00Linking Teamcenter Managed Excel Files With Solid Edge Embedded Client Files<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If an Excel file already exists and is managed in Teamcenter under an Item ID, how to then create a link from the existing managed Excel file to a managed Solid Edge Embedded Client [SEEC] file?<br />
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://pastoralyn.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/insight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="http://pastoralyn.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/insight.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Are your Insight and SharePoint users complaining about how when they first try to access content from the server they are experiencing a delay? Here’s how to fix it.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
On Windows 7 by default the WebClient service is set to Manual and is not started.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCmJJnYvqN4WCXO7aqy96B3PoRh18XIHasaj74hjrnKmdHiCAfA2-6rX55MBj0R5N9gWLb3Ikgx-sw0ErY1Wui8FucPJ0DsD2AVs0E4wt2ozGE3aNHiywGvLBdHNDa5WoZLg-kIqzLThjL/s1600/screenshot.1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCmJJnYvqN4WCXO7aqy96B3PoRh18XIHasaj74hjrnKmdHiCAfA2-6rX55MBj0R5N9gWLb3Ikgx-sw0ErY1Wui8FucPJ0DsD2AVs0E4wt2ozGE3aNHiywGvLBdHNDa5WoZLg-kIqzLThjL/s400/screenshot.1.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Whenever you first access a SharePoint folder the WebClient must be started by the system. This provides a lag and delay in accessing and reading the content of the SharePoint folder. How big of a delay?<br />
<br />
In the video [sorry for the poor quality - first time working with video in the blog], we can see that the WebClient service is set to the default Manual and is not started. In Windows Explorer we have several SharePoint Network Location shortcuts. Whenever I first attempt to open one of these SharePoint folders look at the delay in opening and the green progress bar while waiting on the WebClient service to start.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxNVMZY9GI5BMZZRIG1Tqu4Xw4duX22VFQub8W8vB_WNfvMYXnOBL2IUojc9EXT6K0kdzUZSZiI1cgJnmGizg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
You can clearly see a 30 second delay waiting on the WebClient service to start followed by an additional 17 seconds for a total of 47 seconds waiting on Windows Explorer to finally return and display the content of the SharePoint folder. So how does this translate to Solid Edge Insight initial access performance?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dz_oUVa9ohArqkGWZLO8zz4At1YEYemYdNW8N0B4nk7caE1ZYpzt49oRoDmbhCd76itQpQAP2WtXSUA_U_rkQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Again, clearly a 48 second delay waiting on the WebClient service to start and the folder list to return.<br />
<br />
So how to improve this initial first access time? Simply set the WebClient service to Automatic so that it is started and already running after initial boot up of the workstation.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW9ug8lH83dMgkDH9ClGgY_mxfV-ml2DGWTZ8ai_Zhyphenhyphen6j3zamBUghF-6Q8x27KBkBsm8dXY0J5up6Y_ww5FZuME9crBzYxi99OsFazrf0nZ0D2nfda4quAzWTYt2uEoZkn11bDNtH3xAxW/s1600/screenshot.2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="153" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW9ug8lH83dMgkDH9ClGgY_mxfV-ml2DGWTZ8ai_Zhyphenhyphen6j3zamBUghF-6Q8x27KBkBsm8dXY0J5up6Y_ww5FZuME9crBzYxi99OsFazrf0nZ0D2nfda4quAzWTYt2uEoZkn11bDNtH3xAxW/s320/screenshot.2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLBdT4j1mvOBlqemWpkrT2VVRJVo-XThGYmgacu8gUwdzUnplDZkexMFFvlp9p7j00hu2UbIBl31TGtsrX3p91Go0r-H7Dk-Qwq_c2BzIfXPrW6z7YQndO06B2xZrkOmq12xcJ3DIYK1JR/s1600/screenshot.3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLBdT4j1mvOBlqemWpkrT2VVRJVo-XThGYmgacu8gUwdzUnplDZkexMFFvlp9p7j00hu2UbIBl31TGtsrX3p91Go0r-H7Dk-Qwq_c2BzIfXPrW6z7YQndO06B2xZrkOmq12xcJ3DIYK1JR/s320/screenshot.3.png" width="284" /></a></div>
Then reboot the workstation so that the service is started. You must reboot the workstation for the change to take affect properly. Simply setting to Automatic and then manually starting the service is not the same as rebooting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwnbbEk70jPvqjvH2A7HUQMNT0G9eZhip36JqmOpXUK8rGQmgGNTgrrTe6aWK3h_mGs-pmFiNaKgOQitT8qHC3Z2ulmtmIWEtxo1J0Tv6GG1LHsWzQNY3gSknPSCFOf7_JWxZf0rAyRyrL/s1600/screenshot.4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="142" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwnbbEk70jPvqjvH2A7HUQMNT0G9eZhip36JqmOpXUK8rGQmgGNTgrrTe6aWK3h_mGs-pmFiNaKgOQitT8qHC3Z2ulmtmIWEtxo1J0Tv6GG1LHsWzQNY3gSknPSCFOf7_JWxZf0rAyRyrL/s320/screenshot.4.png" width="320" /></a></div>
And the difference in our initial first access times? On Windows Explorer it takes 1 second for the SharePoint folder content to return. Compared to the 47 seconds with the WebClient service set to Manual an overall 97.9 % improvement.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxZ6y-EZWHZmmCar5q3Q38wAr-siqOtmLzJBn2OAYDXYunYLygZvNu5ZTOkGdCGbugB0JfX-LuXW402FMiljg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
And with Solid Edge Insight? It takes 3 seconds for the File Open to return the content of the SharePoint folder. Compare this to the 48 seconds with the WebClient set to Manual and you have a 93.7% improvement.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dy8lYapRtxItMp0AcgiFXV9POTxBsQLFnXfIcFpX2tIZ2qt_NpLzlwuiI4UTuqJIBaNPRFSejr5LOZqCAZ28A' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
In the grand scheme of things is improving the initial first access times really a huge improvement in overall performance? Not really but there definitely is a delay in initial first access times. Your users will notice this delay. So it may well be prudent to just go ahead and set the WebClient service to Automatic on all your users workstations. <a href="http://www.indiatalkies.com/images/inventor435r.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.indiatalkies.com/images/inventor435r.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Autodesk Inventor offers two methods for saving Inventor IDW files to the AutoCAD DWG format. Which method works best for opening the .dwg file in Solid Edge?<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The two methods that Inventor provides for saving Inventor .idw files (drawings) to DWG format are Export and Save As. <br />
<br />
<u>Export:</u><br />
When you export an Autodesk Inventor file into AutoCAD DWG, the Autodesk Inventor data is translated into AutoCAD objects in a new DWG file. Translated AutoCAD data is not associative back to the Autodesk Inventor model, but the AutoCAD data is fully editable in AutoCAD. <br />
<br />
<u>Save As:</u><br />
You can save as an Autodesk Inventor drawings (.IDW) natively in DWG format without translation. Autodesk Inventor drawing data remains associative to its part or assembly file. When opening the file in AutoCAD the Autodesk Inventor drawing data looks just like it does in Autodesk Inventor. You can view, plot, measure and minimally edit the Autodesk Inventor drawing data in AutoCAD. <br />
<br />
So which method do we use to save Inventor DWG files that are usable in Solid Edge?<br />
<br />
If you choose the Export method Solid Edge can successfully open the .dwg files in Solid Edge Draft. If you choose the Save As method Solid Edge *cannot* successfully open the .dwg files. <br />
<br />
How to tell if an Inventor generated DWG file was created using the Export or Save As method?<br />
<br />
Unfortunately there are no obvious or outward signs as to how the file was generated, unless you investigate further.<br />
<ol>
<li>Save As files will translate into Solid Edge, but will produce only empty Drawing views. </li>
<li>Save As files opened in AutoCAD, will have the appearance of a drawing that was created from a 3D model (Multiple aligned views, and perhaps a shaded view).</li>
<li>The data in a Saved As file is mostly in the form of block. The block names will all start with the letter “I” as in ( i10, i11, i12 etc…)</li>
</ol>
Do you know of any other way to quickly tell by which method an Inventor DWG file was generated? If so, please share in the comments section below.<br />
<br />
Hopefully this tip will help you with your Inventor DWG files imported into Solid Edge. Several months ago I <a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.com/2011/11/automate-creating-sharepoint-and.html?showComment=1330008066781#c7712964925130523172">posted a script</a> for automating the creation of SharePoint and Insight Network Location shortcuts. Unfortunately that script only accounted for http addresses and failed to correctly implement https. Thanks to a Chris who commented on the original post about the oversight with https addresses. So without much ado, here is an updated version of that script which takes into account both http and https addresses.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
You can download the script directly from <a href="https://raw.github.com/uk-dave/SharePoint/master/CreateSharePointNetworkLocations.vbs" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Or simply copy and paste the code below into a text file and save it with a .vbs file extension.<br />

I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to incorporate any requests but if you would like to see certain functionality incorporated into this script it never hurts to ask :-)<br />
<br />
As always YMMV but please feel free to give me feedback in the comments sections. Thanks.<br />
<br />
Update 02/27: Doh! When adding support for https addresses I accidentally broke http addresses and port numbers. Thankfully the error was caught and I have updated the script to fix this. Now both http and https addresses along with port numbers work as expected. My apologies for the mistake :-(Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06447170267475311967noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7178684148547950944.post-68255189870030097912012-02-20T15:15:00.000+00:002012-02-20T15:48:16.580+00:00Solid Edge Keyboard Stickers<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Need help remembering some of those Solid Edge keyboard shortcuts?<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<a href="http://www.4keyboard.com/" target="_blank">4Keyboard</a> has a set of Solid Edge keyboard stickers that you can apply to your keyboard. I haven’t use this product personally so cannot attest to the quality or usefulness of the product but would imagine that for Solid Edge noobs this may be a handy tool. Anyone had experience with this product they’d care to share?<br />

GTAC Software Field Bulletin SFB-Teamcenter-6464 has some great tweaks for tuning Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 with Teamcenter.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Although the bulletin is intended for deployments of 2,000 concurrent users or more, the bulletin also states that there was no adverse impact setting these tweaks for smaller deployments and that these tweaks could be applied to all deployments of SQL Server with Teamcenter.<br /><br />You will need a WebKey account to be able to access the GTAC SFB directly:<br />

<br />
Saw the following question come across the LinkedIn forums regarding how to filter for only the latest Item Revision in Teamcenter:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE72X0VTnagF4rPk9Na4u1wyu4rPWcgQPHSO6_fTxutNTB1OjsfIAc4m_A7TYf4zPPtS_CCUcwt9Jsz6HgLyQKYENzj1B-jJx3xgTI28zji6jobHpRLhaRdsAqjfXBqzt1nVDMW7R8p-dY/s1600/screenshot.0.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE72X0VTnagF4rPk9Na4u1wyu4rPWcgQPHSO6_fTxutNTB1OjsfIAc4m_A7TYf4zPPtS_CCUcwt9Jsz6HgLyQKYENzj1B-jJx3xgTI28zji6jobHpRLhaRdsAqjfXBqzt1nVDMW7R8p-dY/s400/screenshot.0.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So I thought I would post detailed instructions on how to accomplish this.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
So we have the scenario where the item has multiple Item Revisions including two in work Revisions and one Revision which has been released with status (Rev B with the Status of 60):<br />

With ST4 MP2 and earlier an issue has been discovered that can result in
slow Solid Edge startup times. Specifically
the issue revolves around the Most Recently used (MRU) list.<br />

To resolve simply reset the user’s MRU list. You reset the MRU by deleting the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Unigraphics

For whatever reason, you may wish to show on the Solid Edge draft file the user profile information for the owning user of the Item Revision that contains the SE Draft dataset. Here is the mapping on how to accomplish this.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The Teamcenter Person Profile for the owning user on an Item Revision:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit5Y1ig8Q0Bffkxa60fSz0ywxJ9TFHd946NtDXLRiXiWmUM3P8r1FAVDP8eXuQiviQYzqH33TDIDFj58msfe0RVjXVbN6RT4-XglUiU6PEp75khR4pTZCeByLW-RBUQS1VPY8g-QeB2Qt1/s1600/image001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit5Y1ig8Q0Bffkxa60fSz0ywxJ9TFHd946NtDXLRiXiWmUM3P8r1FAVDP8eXuQiviQYzqH33TDIDFj58msfe0RVjXVbN6RT4-XglUiU6PEp75khR4pTZCeByLW-RBUQS1VPY8g-QeB2Qt1/s400/image001.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The mapping for the Teamcenter owning user Person Profile information on the Item Revision to the SE Draft dataset:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="color: #990000;">
{ Dataset type="SE Draft"<br />
Address : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA1 /master=iman /description="Address"<br />
City : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA2 /master=iman /description="City"<br />
State : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA3 /master=iman /description="State"<br />
ZipCode : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA4 /master=iman /description="Zip Code"<br />
Country : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA5 /master=iman /description="Country"<br />
Organization : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA6 /master=iman /description="Organization"<br />
EmployeeNo : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA7 /master=iman /description="Employee Number"<br />
MailCode : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA8 /master=iman /description="Internal Mail Code"<br />
Email : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA9 /master=iman /description="E-mail"<br />
Telephone : ItemRevision.owning_user.person.PA10 /master=iman /description="Telephone"<br />
}</blockquote>
And the Person Profile information in the SEEC CPD and on the draft once successfully mapped:<br />

UPDATE: Please note that this post has been replaced by an updated post (<a href="http://david-merritt.blogspot.com/2012/02/updated-automate-creating-sharepoint.html">here</a>) that contains a newer version of the script.<br />
<br />
With SharePoint sometimes it is necessary to create
Network Location shortcuts on the client workstation. For Solid Edge
Insight this is not only necessary but also a requirement.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sure creating three or four Network Locations is no big
deal. But what if you need to standardize
those Network Locations across all workstations and user logons? Do you really want to be manually creating
the same Network Location shortcuts for 20 user ids across 20 different workstations? Having the ability to automate the creation
of these Network Location shortcuts could certainly be a time saver.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you’ve ever created the SharePoint Network Location
shortcut and then tried to copy and paste the shortcut across user ids or workstations you’ve
discovered that the process is not that simple and typically will not work as
expected.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Below is a script I put together for automating the creation
of SharePoint Network Location shortcuts.
I’m not a programmer by trade and I’m definitely not VBS proficient but
the script works (for me) and serves the purpose.
The script is designed to be used with Windows 7 clients. I have not tested it but would not expect this script to work with XP. XP network location shortcuts behave differently from Windows 7 against SharePoint URLs.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is a simple script and does minimal error checking. It
is provided merely as a barebones example of how to accomplish this task. The script definitely should be fleshed out
to best suit your specific needs and environment i.e. incorporated into a user logon script etc.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Simply copy and paste the code below into a text file and
save it with a .vbs file extension. Or
you can download the script directly from <a href="https://raw.github.com/uk-dave/SharePoint/master/CreateSharePointNetworkLocations.vbs" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>

<br />
Courtesy of the <a href="http://sqlfool.com/">SQL Fool</a> an awesome script to defragment the SQL Server indexes. This is a maintenance script and can be useful for improving your overall SQL Server performance issues.<br />
<br />
SQL utility and maintenance scripts can be applicable for both Insight and TCX installations running SQL Server.<br />
<br />
So does index defragmentation matter? From <a href="http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966523.aspx">Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Index Defragmentation Best Practices</a>:<i> </i><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>"The <b>workload performance increase</b> realized in the small-scale environment <b>ranged from 60 percent at the low level of fragmentation to more than 460 percent at the highest level of fragmentation</b>. The workload performance increased realized for the large-scale environment ranged from 13 percent at the low fragmentation level to 40 percent at the medium fragmentation level."</i></blockquote>
So how to use this defragmentation script?<br />

Open another SQL Query window. Insert the parameters you wish to run the script with. For this example, use the following parameters to defragment all databases, with the maximum verboseness including debug messages, print results, etc.:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>EXECUTE dbo.dba_indexDefrag_sp<br /> @executeSQL = 1<br /> , @printCommands = 1<br /> , @debugMode = 1<br /> , @printFragmentation = 1<br /> , @forceRescan = 1<br /> , @maxDopRestriction = 1<br /> , @minPageCount = 8<br /> , @maxPageCount = NULL<br /> , @minFragmentation = 1<br /> , @rebuildThreshold = 30<br /> , @defragDelay = '00:00:05'<br /> , @defragOrderColumn = 'page_count'<br /> , @defragSortOrder = 'DESC'<br /> , @excludeMaxPartition = 1<br /> , @timeLimit = NULL;</i></blockquote>

<br />
Sit back and wait for the processing to finish. Depending on the parameters used to run the script you can check the Messages tab for progress:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXwkUOi-7S7UDlkjhyO3QB7g6N-RM9Ck3gNN03e2qZXOq7rT7OGzGdlWYViNOGCRyqHAts6eHZflwsXFZKlkCyQKG52W4URFyROMQNBnmd7_pMjuQigQhFN1Mdtx-SNpos52ThcoFU7Xuh/s1600/image012.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXwkUOi-7S7UDlkjhyO3QB7g6N-RM9Ck3gNN03e2qZXOq7rT7OGzGdlWYViNOGCRyqHAts6eHZflwsXFZKlkCyQKG52W4URFyROMQNBnmd7_pMjuQigQhFN1Mdtx-SNpos52ThcoFU7Xuh/s400/image012.png" width="400" /></a></div>

Once complete, again depending on the parameters used review the results. On my test Insight and Teamcenter servers there was considerable fragmentation on the indexes with several at 90%, 95% and even 99% fragmented. My test servers see nowhere close to the volume, data and subsequent defragmentation that your production Insight or Teamcenter servers experience.<br />
<br />
Initial Insight SQL Server fragmentation results:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Subsequent Teamcenter SQL Server fragmentation results:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I would hope that it goes without saying but just to be sure, run this fragmentation script during off hours when the database is idle.<br />
<br />
On a production server you would want to install this script as a periodic maintenance task.<br />
<br />
As always, YMMV.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06447170267475311967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7178684148547950944.post-61116337580078776572011-10-10T20:58:00.001+01:002011-12-14T23:14:16.132+00:00Purging Solid Edge Embedded Client Unreferenced JT Override Datasets from Teamcenter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://blogs.trb.com/community/news/weston/forum/trash.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="http://blogs.trb.com/community/news/weston/forum/trash.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In Solid Edge Embedded Client (SEEC) when creating assembly features a JT dataset is created and uploaded into Teamcenter. This assembly feature JT dataset is commonly referred to as a "JT override". SEEC JT override dataset names take the form of "Ovr_<id #>" where <id #> is some system generated
id number.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHP1BSRFWR6Oyja-wIHzaO5lNp72p1WhGRPiIfuPgjt-fqitjI791yUjMJqdYYIEyg7i45tKocvSrJiHr4RMW7ydJA3cW-K3dpIHb_tTPBYHT60KIRMQlw3_BbU-0lt6PzbMu5fNfH3VFu/s1600/image001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHP1BSRFWR6Oyja-wIHzaO5lNp72p1WhGRPiIfuPgjt-fqitjI791yUjMJqdYYIEyg7i45tKocvSrJiHr4RMW7ydJA3cW-K3dpIHb_tTPBYHT60KIRMQlw3_BbU-0lt6PzbMu5fNfH3VFu/s400/image001.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Whenever assembly features are added or modified to the existing assembly a new JT override file is created. This process then leaves the original JT override file unreferenced and effectively orphaned in Teamcenter. Over time these unreferenced JT overrides will accumulate and take up disk space.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHERfrlGnNgPMGyPLQdMOr27ms9a1GKuhWa6iNzlAyqqC18oTWUdHBze2Tn-evtkTPScVsKreBXaT3EJjy09z31iSYnfY5_GunwakGqtaicQ21OG_m2lHqPUt4bLPFexw4cNqTRL6M4M1R/s1600/image003.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHERfrlGnNgPMGyPLQdMOr27ms9a1GKuhWa6iNzlAyqqC18oTWUdHBze2Tn-evtkTPScVsKreBXaT3EJjy09z31iSYnfY5_GunwakGqtaicQ21OG_m2lHqPUt4bLPFexw4cNqTRL6M4M1R/s320/image003.png" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
In a Teamcenter command prompt run the "collect_garbage" command:<br />
<br />
<i>collect_garbage -u=infodba -p=infodba -g=dba -dataset</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3KuAl6MRjHfF9CrYQEnorrkf_PpbtviAl2Be0YVCN4hw3Esu7BIDuPOSC2V8o-NxBJKUvhHD_xboCm9wvokMxqYhcPdER2qK0gCYD5szHVgt3_Sp6sP9C0Et0cIu6HOo6Bx95zC90Cl5/s1600/image005.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="96" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3KuAl6MRjHfF9CrYQEnorrkf_PpbtviAl2Be0YVCN4hw3Esu7BIDuPOSC2V8o-NxBJKUvhHD_xboCm9wvokMxqYhcPdER2qK0gCYD5szHVgt3_Sp6sP9C0Et0cIu6HOo6Bx95zC90Cl5/s400/image005.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This command will collect *all* unreferenced datasets into a "WASTE BASKET" folder in Teamcenter:<br />
<br />
WARNING: Do not simply delete all of the datasets collected in the "WASTE BASKET". Review the collected datasets and make informed decisions on if those datasets need to remain in Teamcenter or can be safely deleted. Whenever performing broad system maintenance utilities it is always prudent to have a good backup of Teamcenter. For the purpose of these instructions, which is focused on unreferenced JT overrides we can safely assume that all unreferenced JT datasets beginning with the name "Ovr_" are SEEC JT overrides and are safe to remove.<br />
<br />
Review the content of the "WASTE BASKET" and use "Cut" to remove all datasets that do not start with the name "Ovr_":<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwGw9FLfq8M4QIUQPEqF0x0u1w4N1Ke6IJY1gs3aLC8HEG18KNq1nT56tx1nMLdayTRjX9nmPRJwyjUEli-qCOP0LFSML_HUV0Fcwc1vO605iNhxPwSamE0dWcsDQ6zHgUeIfdb-TsuIrJ/s1600/image007.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="162" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwGw9FLfq8M4QIUQPEqF0x0u1w4N1Ke6IJY1gs3aLC8HEG18KNq1nT56tx1nMLdayTRjX9nmPRJwyjUEli-qCOP0LFSML_HUV0Fcwc1vO605iNhxPwSamE0dWcsDQ6zHgUeIfdb-TsuIrJ/s400/image007.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Once the "WASTE BASKET" contains only the unreferenced JT override
datasets then run "collect_garbage" to delete all of the datasets
remaining in "WASTE BASKET":<br />
<br />
<i>collect_garbage -u=infodba -p=infodba -g=dba -dataset -delete </i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
All SEEC generated unreferenced JT override datasets have now been successfully removed from Teamcenter.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06447170267475311967noreply@blogger.com2
